Improving User Services Through Open Source Solutions

Joe Lucia, Villanova University, will offer a scan of the current library environment, present an overview of open source and the value it presents to libraries and their various organizations, and offer his view as to whether libraries should consider open source alternatives. Joseph P. Lucia, University Librarian, Villanova University, current Chair of the board of directors of Lyrasis, and former Board Member of the Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc (PALCI). Villanova was recently awarded a $50,000 prize by the Mellon Foundation for VUFind, an open source OPAC developed under Joe’s direction.

 

Randy Dykhuis, Executive Director of the Michigan Library Consortium . The MLC is the largest multi-type library consortium in the state. Under Randy’s direction, MLC has been a champion for Michigan libraries and a key player in cutting costs and improving services through effective collaboration. John provides system support for St John’s University Libraries and for the Westchester Area Library Directors Organization, a greater New York City library consortium. John Brice, Library Director of the Meadville, PA Public Library, and Executive Director and System Administrator for the Crawford County Federated Library System, Crawford County, PA. John initiated and conducted the move to Koha with all system members now participating.
